Poor Miss Pea. She’s going through diaper rash hell. It started last week, she was running a fever Thursday evening and it continued through Friday. Thankfully we had a doctor appointment for her 9 month check. When I undressed her in the office her little butt was blistery. Major ouch! Our doctor thought she had a virus and it would run it’s course. The diaper rash had cleared up with a couple of days use of Desitin.
Tonight, it came back with a vengence. Her poor little bottom! Not a darn thing will help it. We decided to just put her in a pajama top tonight and get up every hour to change her diaper. Not my idea of fun, but hopefully it will help her. I’m just at a loss of what to do. We haven’t had diaper rash before, and I don’t think that Johnny had issues with that either…but it was eight years ago…I could be mistaken!
Do you know of something that really works? A tried and true solution? I’m wondering if it could be a food allergy? We switched to Pampers wipes, but have used them on and off. We may be making another trip to the doctor!

Hey Sky – can you get Bepanthan ANTISEPTIC (not plain) there? It was what I used exclusively for Imogen and it’s been great for Charlie too. Also works on mild excema!
ABSOLUTELY! It’s probably a yeast infection. My girls have all gone through it, and my Step sister in laws sons have too…quite often I might add. The Dr. will give you a tube of expensive medicine, but my friend who is a pediatrician recommends athlete’s foot cream. It’s perfectly safe for baby and is for yeast! Try it and see. I swear by it, and so does my Dr.
Awwwww. bless her heart. i have nothing to offer but the desinex so …nothing. i hope she gets to feeling better cause that really stinks.
Oh the poor baby! So sorry to hear. In the caribbean where over the counter meds can be so costly we use a light mixture of baking soda in water to wash the baby’s bumpsy and area of infection. It works too! Add about 1 tsp of baking soda to about 1 -2 cups of warm water. If you apply straight vaseline every time you change the diaper it often helps prevent diaper rash. It sounds like your daughter has yeast. Not fun for baby or Mommy! Hope it gets better really soon.
Here from NaComLeavMo. I don’t have kids (yet) but friends I’ve heard friend recommend another option: switch to cotton cloth diapers for a few days. She’s likely to be grumpy about it, because it will feel different, but disposables irritate existing diaper rash much more than cotton.
Poor Miss Pea. I’m a newbie so you know I can’t give any advice! Just reading in case we have the problem in the future! I hope her boo boo gets better
.
We have had very good luck with Boudreaux’s Butt Paste. Also, instead of baby wipes just use warm water and a wash cloth.
If it is yeast I second mcc’s advice. Get an antifungal cream with clotrimazole in it. Use it two to three times a day under the butt paste, or some other type of barrier cream. You can also use some hydrocortisone cream 1% twice a day, again, use it under the butt paste.
Good luck!
p.s. I’m a pharmacist, and a mom.
OH NO! MY HEART BLED FOR PEA!
I hope she’s doing better today!
My middle guy had the worst diaper rashes – blisters and bleeding and just raw! He ended up with food allergies which he has now almost grown out of at age 4. If it is a yeast infection, you will need an Rx. I swear by Triple Paste and so do many Moms I know. It is ‘over the counter’ but some pharmacies have it n the Pharmacy. It comes in a big tub. Hope it gets better soon – I felt so bad when it happened. Also when it was really bad, I took him in the kitchen sink and gently let the water clean him off. That way there was no rubbing. Here from NCLM.
My dd got it extremely bad a few times to the point of bleeding. My ped always gave me a Rx for Nystatin and it cleared it up quickly. Vaseline helps prevent diaper rash, so I always kept that on her. Kaden has had it a couple of times, and I put Tripple Paste on it (before it got bad) and it was gone by morning. I get Tripple Paste at Wal-Mart in the baby section. Oh, and the baby wipes always burned when dd had it bad, so it helped by washing the soap out of them before using them. I only did that when she had diaper rash already, not on a daily basis. I hope Pea gets better soon.
I’m so sorry she’s having such a difficult time. We slather petroleum jelly on Kaelin’s bottom every time we change her and it seems to work.
Hope her bum is better soon (and stays better!)
Here from NaComLeavMo. Don’t have any experience with diaper rash myself, but I’ve heard others recommend that Boudreaux’s Butt Paste. What about A&D Ointment?
Here from NCLM – we had diaper rash issues, but not yeast related. I did alot of “naked bum time” – putting baby to sleep w/o a diaper and changing the crib when a wet came about, and playing w/o a diaper on non-carpet floors to get lots of air. I used little cloths & soap & water instead of wipes (just cut up a flannel sheet). Desitin worked very well for us when I wasn’t doing those things.
I always found we’d get a diaper rash just before big teething times – my son didn’t drool much, so I figure he was swallowing his saliva & that made everything more acidic when it came out. That’s my theory, but I don’t know if it’s true or not.
Good luck!
