Going Green with Joey Totes! – Giveaway!

by seeryusmama on April 30, 2009

**This giveaway is now closed! Congrats to Dana!**

I’m a stickler for using reusable bags when out shopping. After coming across the Joey Totes and giving them a shot, I’m glad I did! Most of my reusable totes are canvas material bags from JC Pennys. I have a few from Staples. They are a great size, but don’t compact.

Each Joey Tote collapses into an oversized pouch that is sewn into the inside seam of each bag. Even better, each pouch is designed to carry more than one bag. I have the Joey Set, it’s 1 big bag and 2 small bags. I’m able to put the two smaller bags into the big pouch. It’s so handy!

Joey Totes are made from a material commonly used in outdoor apparel called ripstop Nylon. Each bag is reinforced with double-folded handles that are tough enough to carry 40 lbs. and will last for years. Keep Joey Totes clean by throwing them in the gentle cycle of the wash or by hand washing. Hang to dry.

Kate and Chris are the brains behind Joey Totes, here’s their story…

Chris and I are a thirty-something couple living in a quaint Maryland town on the Chesapeake Bay. I am an environmental planner while Chris now runs our little company after spending most of his career in the forest products industry. This is how Joey Totes started:
I am sure you have seen those $.99 reusable bags being sold in the grocery. We had many ourselves, but we were constantly leaving them behind as we walked out the door. Chris commented that we needed something that could stash in my purse or that he could easily hold in one hand. The more we thought through the problem, the more things we realized what we needed our bags to do:

•We needed more than one or two bags to carry our stuff, otherwise we went home with more plastic bags
•We needed a large bag that we could carry on our shoulder and one or two small bags that we could hand carry
•We needed the set of bags to easily stow into one small unit
•I wanted the bags to be washable
•I wanted bags that I wouldn’t feel awkward using in the mall as well as in the grocery
•And we definitely wanted a bag that would last!

Joey Totes can be purchased online, the Joey Set retails for $20.00 and is the best value! The bags can be purchased separately though. Order a Joey Set for Mom this year! It would be a great Mother’s Day gift!

I learned the handles are not positioned like other ‘t-shirt’ bags and are designed to fit nicely under your arm or along your side like a purse.

I learned about Reduce, Reuse and Recycle from a different viewpoint. Concentrating on reducing and reusing items should come first before recycling. Once an item is no longer useful, it should be recycled. However, the numbers for recycling paper and plastic bags do not add up to an appealing solution. That less then 4% of all plastic bags are recycled, and, the energy used to recycle paper outweighs much of the benefit versus virgin wood fibers. Both use valuable resources for a “disposable” product which contributes to energy consumption and pollutes our environment.

This is an excellent post. There are other simple things that almost anyone can do to be more green and conserve energy, like installing a ceiling fan or a Programmable Thermostat that can adjust the temperature automatically for times when it is not needed, or cleaning or replacing their Furnace Filter or Humidifier Filters with something like Aprilaire Furnace Filters or Aprilaire Humidifier Filters that are more energy efficient. Also, installing Refrigerator Water Filters instead of drinking store bought bottled water, cuts down on waste. Just some ideas that might help the cause.
