Kelloggs With Fiber!

I know I’ve talked about it before, but Paige has “issues”.  I have to keep a watchful eye on her diet and get the biggest bang for our buck…so to say.

It’s not surprising that 9 out of 10 kids lack enough fiber in their diets.  It’s just too easy to fall into the old quick and easy junk food diet.

Well friends, I’m want to share with you a special treat.  Thanks to the Kellogg’s Company, kids (and adults) can get more fiber from two of their most popular cereals.  Apple Jacks and Froot Loops now have three grams of fiber per serving.  With ingredients such as whole-grain corn flour, whole-grain oat flour, oat fiber and soluble corn fiber…it’s the right track to a healthy diet for your child.100_1393

First, a little lesson in fiber.  Fiber is found in fruits, vegetables and grains.  There are two types of fiber, soluble and insoluble.100_1392

Soluble fiber slows down the absorption of glucose (sugar) into the bloodstream. Because there are ramifications of food having little fiber and lots of sugar, including difficulty concentrating and becoming tired immediately, it is important to get soluble fiber into your child’s diet.

After a meal that is high in fiber, sugar enters the bloodstream slowly and does not cause that peak in blood sugar level, which is a good thing. A lot of foods that kids like have little fiber and lots of sugar which enters the blood very quickly and then the blood sugar drops rapidly, causing kids to be hungry again quicker and to have a hard time concentrating.

Insoluble fiber is important for maintaining regularity and digestive tract health. A diet high in insoluble fiber also helps decrease episodes of constipation and gives kids a feeling of fullness so they are not overeating.

In our house, cereal a nightly routine.  Usually, after bath time, Paige will ask for a bowl of cereal to munch on.  Usually, she eats it dry, with a spoon…of course!  I was curious to see if she noticed a difference in Froot Loops with fiber and Froot Loops without.  You know how toddlers are, change anything up…and you could be facing disaster.

Not the case!  She didn’t notice one from the other!  In fact, I had a hard time telling the difference.  The cereal with fiber has the same great taste.  If anything it may have a slightly different texture…smoother, if that makes sense…but you’d have to be pretty picky to notice it.  Can you tell which cereal has fiber?

So the gist…fiber is a good thing!  It aids the digestive system and helps get nutrients get to where they need to be to do what they need to do.  Keep your eye out for more Kellogg’s products that have the added fiber.

I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Kellogg’s and received boxes of Froot Loops and Apple Jacks and a gift certificate to thank me for taking the time to participate.

Great to know it doesn’t taste differently, so kids would still eat them. I’d keep my eyes on these new packages.
