A turkey dinner for eight as low as $20.  Yeah, you heard me right.  For as low as $20. That’s rocking, right?  Thanksgiving-Feast-Prepared

Walmart is making that happen by offering Select Grade A Turkeys for 40 cents per pound.  Make magic happen by following using this guide and your own personal touches:

  • One 12-pound Grade A turkey*
  • Three 11 to 15.5-ounce cans Green Giant vegetables
  • Two 14-ounce cans Ocean Spray cranberry sauce
  • Three 6-ounce boxes of Stove Top stuffing
  • One 5-pound bag of red potatoes
  • One 12-count package of Sara Lee dinner rolls
  • One 22-ounce pumpkin roll cake

The fine print…*Prices and availability may vary in AK, HI, OK, NM, WI and at Walmart.com. Prices on select Grade A turkeys begin November 4; limit two turkeys per customer; weights and brands vary by store. Quantities are limited; no rain checks. All prices do not include tax.

If you are looking for more recipes, visit Walmart.com and their Holiday Meals section.  Melissa d’Arabians from The Food Network will have recipes and video with Christmas entertaining tips and recipes soon.

In our house, Thanksgiving is a time for family.  Hanging out with my brothers and mom…life couldn’t be better.  I thought I would have a lovely Martha Stewart Thanksgiving this year…but it’s on the back burner.  And I’m okay with that. Since I won’t be cooking the full meal, I’ll contribute by bringing one or two dishes to the table.  One of the favorites is Pumpkin Sheet Cake.  Let me warn you…it’s massive!  A very moist cake with a lovely cream cheese frosting…the perfect ending to dinner.

Perfectly Pumpkin Cake:

CAKE:

4 eggs
1½ cups sugar
1 cup cooking oil
1 – 16 oz. can pumpkin
2 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
2 teaspoons cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda

FROSTING:

1 3 oz. cream cheese (softened)
½ cup butter (softened)
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups powdered sugar

In mixing bowl – beat: eggs, sugar, oil, pumpkin until fluffy.  Stir together: flour, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, soda.  Add to the pumpkin mixture and mix.
15 X 10 pan – 350° – 23-30 minutes.  Top with frosting.

    When I was a teenager, we had soldiers join us for T-giving. My mom likes a big crowd on the holiday, and they needed people to feed some soldiers, so we had 6 of them come to our T-giving along with our family of course. It was so much fun, I’ll always remember it!

    Here’s the recipe I use for using Cranberry sauce — it was featured on R/R last year? Big Daddy was a guest on her show and shared this recipe. SO tasty.
    Ingredients
    * 1 (12-ounce) bag fresh cranberries
    * 1/2 cup orange juice
    * 1/2 cup apple cider, divided
    * 1/2 cup sugar
    * 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
    * Pinch cayenne pepper
    * Salt and ground black pepper
    * 1 teaspoon cornstarch
    * 1 cup Granny Smith apples, peeled and diced
    * 1 teaspoon fresh basil, chopped
    Place a medium pot over medium heat with the cranberries, orange juice, apple cider (hold back about 2 tablespoons), sugar, cinnamon and cayenne pepper. Season with salt and pepper.

    Bring liquid up to a bubble then reduce the heat to medium and cook until the cranberries start to break apart and the mixture becomes saucy, about 5 minutes.

    In a small bowl, stir together cornstarch and reserved apple cider, and stir the mixture into the simmering cranberries. Add the apples and cook until tender, and the mixture thickens, 3-4 minutes. Stir in the basil and let cool to room temperature. Serve at room temperature.

    My favorite Thanksgiving memory is when I first got married and wanted to have the traditional family feast at my new place and also so I could show off my cooking skills to my new husband. It was a complete disaster!! I burned the turkey, the dressing had too much sage, you name it, I ruined it. Bless my mother’s heart, she somehow anticipated my less than stellar culinary skills and had secretly brought along a whole Thanksgiving meal, complete with turkey already cooked. She allowed me to save face that day. I never did admit to my husband that I didn’t cook the whole meal. But I went back to Mom every chance I got to learn how to cook!! :)

    When I was growing up my mom made cranberry relish by grinding cranberries and apples and adding sugar. This was way before food processors made it easy to do. It was all hand cranked.

    Well I have a Thanksgiving memory – not exactly a great one! I tried to host it one year and had a bunch of people over. My daughter was little and unhappy all day, everything I made got messed up and the day in general was a disaster. I never offered to do it again, unless we bought one of the premade meals!

    My favorite Thanksgiving memory is 1991 for 2 reasons. My husband and I got married the day before Thanksgiving that year and I then took him to my hometown to meet my “large” family – and it was also the last Thanksgiving with my dad.

    I love peas and will make Rache; Ray’s Easy Peas’y recipe:

    Ingredients
    1 stick of butter
    2 boxes frozen peas
    Salt and freshly ground pepper

    Preparation
    Place a medium-sized sauce pot over medium-high heat. Add butter and as it begins to melt, add peas (no need to defrost). Heat through, about 5 minutes. Season with salt and pepper and serve.

    My favorite memories are at Grandmas house as a child. Not a large house but it seemed to hold 30 ish people just fine. All the women in the kitchen cooking and the men telling stories and us kids playing, or listening to the stories if we could get by with it. Sigh.

    My favorite Thanksgiving memory is the first time I remember being awoken by the smells of baking pumpkin pie, rolls and other yummy treats. I was still pretty young, but this was when I realized just how hard my Mom worked on Thanksgiving day. Waking up before dawn to start baking and preparing. I really appreciated it all and offered to help more from then on.

    My favorite recipe is so simple. Just saute asparagus or green beans (both work really well) in a couple of tablespoons of walnut oil for a few minutes. Toward the end, sprinkle in some walnuts and kosher salt. If you like a little pizazz, add a splash of good balsamic vinegar before serving.

    My favorite Thanksgiving memories involve eating at Cracker Barrel so no one has to cook and clean and we can focus on Black Friday shopping! Thanks for the chance to win.

    My best holiday memory is spending the holidays(Thanksgiving & Christmas) with my family at my grandparents. My 82 year old grandma cooks for between 35-40 and we all sit around talking and enjoying each other!

    My favorite recipe is what I call “oatmeal” bread and I just kinda throw things together. It started one year when we had a lot of leftover oatmeal and not wanting to waste it, I threw it in the bread dough I had started making, along with butter, molasses, yeast, a couple eggs, and flour, water. It is yummy and smells so good when it bakes. we do it every year, my daughter does it now, usually.

    my favorite thanksgiving memory is of when my grandparents were still alive. we always went to mama and papa’s house for thanksgiving lunch. the women would work together to get the food ready and we’d all set the table. after the big meal we would talk and relax while we enjoyed our many desserts. after dessert we’d take the dishes into the kitchen and fix our take home plates and do the dishes. i remember the good food, the good times and we all worked together. thanks clallen at ntin dot net

    My favorite Thanksgiving memories all involve helping my grandparents when I was younger. They would make a huge meal and then we would divide it all up and make plates for some of the home bound members of our church and deliver it. It was great to take this food to someone who would have spend their day alone.

    My Step-dad makes some awesome beans. He buys the bag of beans. He put them in the big pot with boiling water. He puts a bit of sugar in it. He adds salt and pepper. He put a block of salt pork in it. Then he lets it cook for most the day always adding water and stirring to make sure it don’t burn.

    My favorite Thanksgiving memory is the time, as a kid, that my mom let me make ginger snap cookies. I forgot the sugar and they were so spicy-bitter. But, we fixed them by spreading frosting on them.

    My Favorite Thanksgiving memories are of the ones when my Children were small and we all gathered @ my Mother & Father-in-law’s – including MY Parents, all my Sisters/Brothers-in-laws and assorted other family members and friends! Great food and a wonderful time we all had together – plus it usually SNOWED for the 1st time each year which we all LOVED!!!!

    My favorite Thanksgiving memory is spending Thanksgiving with my Grandma my freshman year in college. It was too far to go to my parent’s house, so I spent it with just my Grandma and I. She knew I was feeling lonely and made it a special day.

    My fave Thanksgiving memory was when my daughter was 2 years old and was gnawing on a big drumstick in her highchair. It was so funny!

    My favorite Thanksgiving memory was def this year. It was my daughters first Thanksgiving and to top it off we had our first family vacation to New York. Thanksgiving morning we took the baby to the beach for the first time (yes it was very cold), to mark the day we wrote “1st Thanksgiving” in the sand and took photos. Such a fun and memorable way to spend my first Thanksgiving with the people I’m most thankful for!
