The Candy of Love

February 9, 2010 · 4 comments

Valentine’s Day is a time to say sweet things.  When you have something sweet to say, say it with Sweethearts.

I still remember those classroom Valentine’s Day parties.  Going through those candy hearts and pulling out the sayings that were perfect.  When I found the perfect saying on my favorite flavor, which was the white one, it was pure bliss.

Sweethearts have changed it up a bit this Valentine’s Day.  It’s out with the old and hello 2010!  Through an online contest, the general public chose new sayings to adorn the candies.  The top 10 new phrases include:

  • Tweet Me
  • Text Me
  • You Rock
  • Soul Mate
  • Love Bug
  • Me + You

And they are paired with the classic expressions:

  • Puppy Love
  • Sweet Love
  • Sweet Pea
  • Love Me

In addition to new sayings, Sweethearts has a variety of new flavors, Blue Raspberry (my fav!), Green Apple, Strawberry, Lemon, Grape and Orange.  I’ve got to tell you, these new flavors are rockin’!  I’ve shared them with my brother, just to get his input and he thought highly of them as well.  You know, judging from the way he was downing them!  To bring them into 2010 in style, gone are the pastels.  You’ll find a brighter candy that has a bit of a softer texture.

You can find Sweethearts in one-ounce boxes, five-ounce theatre boxes and in assorted bag sizes.  With those classroom Valentine’s Day parties right around the corner, why not treat the classroom to Sweethearts?

Sweethearts Fun Facts:

  • This year, enough Sweethearts were produced to circle the globe…twice!
  • Before World War I, Sweethearts were made in various shapes  such as postcards, watches, baseballs or horseshoes, and the hearts were embossed with curlicues.
  • Each year, Jeopardy! includes a Sweethearts trivia question on its show in celebration of Valentine’s Day.
  • Inspired by the technology-driven ways Americans express their feelings for each other, Sweethearts created its very own iPhone app to help users create a personalized virtual box of Sweethearts to share with loved ones.
  • Sweethearts, originally called Motto Hearts, were created in 1866 by Daniel Chase, brother of New England Confectionery Company founder, Oliver Chase.
