I’m one of those people that loves learning quirky facts. So much so, I’ve read all of the Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader books. To be truthful, I’ve read them all many, many times. Just one or two of the quips before I go to bed.
We recently tried out National Geographic Kids, Weird But True. It’s a book chock-full of fun facts! You never know when you’ll need these little bits of knowledge.
Johnny has been reading the facts and then we try to find more information online. For instance,
The Amazon rain forest is home to giant rodents- called capybaras- that are about as tall as German Shepherds.
After using our friend Google, we were able to find out more than we ever wanted to know about Capybaras!
Johnny also read that a hundred year-old chocolate bar sold for nearly $700. And now I’m on the mean mom list because we are not keeping a chocolate bar around the house for 100 years.
I’ve enjoyed reading this book…being a library lady I never know what question will be asked next. For example, it’s very possible that someone would want to know the world’s longest place name. I’d be able to inform them that it is Krungthep Mahanakhon Bovorn Ratanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokpop Noparatratchathani BuriromUdomratchavivee Mahasathan Amornpiman Avatarnsathit Sakkathattiyavisnukarmprasit. Officially known as Bankok, Thailand.
Pretty impressive, right?
Geared for kids 6 and older, I’ve enjoyed reading it as much as Johnny has. Weird But True is filled with 300 facts…and believe me when I tell you that you’ll learn something by reading this book!
