Here Today – Gone Tomorrow

Yesterday was a day from hell.

After several days of rain and late Saturday night and early Sunday morning a down pour, Brandon found water in Pea’s closet.  Not a big deal, this has happened before and it’s our guess that when we re-landscaped the front yard we didn’t pick plants that needed a lot of moisture.

So, I hopped on the computer, ever efficient and decided that we’d get some pussy willows.  I went to the basement to tell Brand and to my surprise found water…everywhere.  In a matter of minutes our basement was flooded.

My partially refinished basement where Paige’s room, Brand and I’s room, our family room, laundry room and our new bathroom is.  We were almost done with the basement, we just needed to find flooring for the laundry room and hallway.

After a call to a few friends and family, we had an enclosed and packed the basement up in a matter of minutes.  Thankfully, little was ruined,  although in the rush I don’t know where anything is.  However, we went from a 4-bedroom 2-bath house, to a 2-bedroom, 1-bath.  Below is a picture of the carpet padding being scrapped from the floor, at this time we had 3-4″ of water.

Paige is really confused.  She doesn’t understand where her bedroom went and she wants it back.  She’s missing her stuffed toys, CD player and will go downstairs and pat the wall to tell us “I want my bed right here.  Please, put it back.”  It’s breaking my heart.

It could be worse.  I know, I know.  Brandon and I have worked on refinishing the basement the last 11 years.  And now, we have to start all over again.  It’s hard to deal with. Because I can see all of the time, money and sweat we’ve put into the place.  We’ve always lived within our means and finished projects as we had the money.  That’s why it too so long, we haven’t refinanced the house to finish it in a timely manner, we took our time and truly made it home…with our two hands.

And now our work is gone.

I’ve cried a thousand tears, but I’m so thankful for our friends and family…and we’ve still got each other.  And we’ll get through this too.

I’m so sorry this happened to you. My mother’s old house would get water all of the time and caused the drywall furniture and clothes to mold. It was a mess. Now, thankfully, she’s living in a house without a basement.

I totally feel you on finishing projects as finances allowed. It’s what we’ve done and now I think we need to do something to protect us. I hope you all tackle the main water source, so you can have your house back.

Oh, I’m so sorry! It IS doubly sad when you think you’ve done everything right, even not going into debt and working so hard, only to see everything ruined! I’m glad, though, that no one was hurt or worse! Thinking of you!

Why does nature play around with us? There are plenty of places needing rain and doesn’t get any (like Dubai!) and now your place is flooded! So sorry to hear that but you’re right: you still have each other and as long as you’re together, you can do anything again.

Thinking of you from miles away!

I am so sorry to hear about your basement! When we lived in Wisconsin our basement flooded one year, but fortunately it wasn’t refinished like yours. I’m sending my thoughts and prayers your way.
