School has started…well for my son anyway, I start classes next week. All of our supplies are ready to be put to use. I’ve never really given it much thought, but what happens to those pens and pencils (especially the mechanical kind) when we’re done with them? You’ve got it, they go directly into the trash.

Paper Mate has just launched a new line of writing utensils – and they are eco-friendly. You heard it right! These pens and mechanical pencils are biodegradable! When you are finished with such device, simply disassemble and remove the components that aren’t biodegradable, see below. You’ll find the list of what is and what isn’t biodegradable on the back of the box.
I had wanted to plant the pen in one of my flower barrels, but they are so stuffed full of flowers it wasn’t possible. Instead, I found the perfect spot near the corner of the garage and fence. It will be easy to remember so we can see how much it’s broken down. Overall, it should take around a year.
The kids had fun with this Plant-A-Pen project and can’t wait to check on it…plus it was a good lesson on what happens when stuff goes into the trash and what happens to items that are biodegradable. If anything, this project has given them a better sense of why we need to be more green in our family! Thanks Paper Mate!
